"SAVE ME" is a Webtoon, an online comic designed to be read in scrolling format. Created by Big Hit Entertainment and LICO, this Webtoon is based on a storyline that has been coming together through the band BTS's music videos for the past four years. The story follows seven boys (based on BTS members), best friends through childhood and into high school, who slowly scatter apart when one boy, Seokjin, leaves to America for two years. Upon his return, he sees that everything has changed. Two of his friends (Namjoon and Taehyung) are in jail, one for killing his abusive father; two more (Hoseok and Jimin) are in the hospital, and the last two (Jungkook and Yoongi) are both dead. Seokjin meets a mysterious voice, which grants him the power to rewind time to April 11th, the day Jungkook died and the day Namjoon and Taehyung were put in jail. Now Seokjin is caught in a time loop, doomed to keep repeating the same day until he can save all his friends. Can he succeed? His friends' lives depend on it. (Read the webtoon here:)
The day of April 11th, Seokjin sees two of his friends but cannot bring himself to make contact with them. A month later, Seokjin learns that April 11th was, in fact, a fateful day: Namjoon was thrown in jail, Taehyung was arrested for killing his father, and Jungkook had taken his own life. Once he is given the power to rewind time, Seokjin finds himself repeating that same day, at first with no recollection. However, as Jungkook dies before Seokjin's very eyes and the timeline resets over and over, Seokjin feels a growing sense of unease. What is it that he has forgotten?
On April 11th, Seokjin sees Namjoon working at a gas station. The next time he sees Namjoon, a month later, is in jail. Namjoon had beat up an aggressive customer who demeaned him and demanded his money back. Being completely broke, Namjoon was unable to pay settlement fees and went to jail instead. Namjoon appears resigned to his fate, reasoning that being broke as he is, he was bound to end up in jail eventually. What a poor sad child.
In the prologue, we see Yoongi standing in a burning room, watching calmly as the flames destroy everything around him. Later, we learn that Yoongi is dead. PRESUMABLY IN THE FIRE. PRESUMABLY BURNED TO DEATH IN THE FIRE HE SET. (The scene correlates to the I Need U music video, in which real-life Yoongi can be seen pouring gasoline and standing in the middle of his room as it goes up in flames.)
Not much information about Hoseok is presented. However, we learn from Namjoon that he has been hospitalized because of an "accident." In the prologue, Hoseok, wearing a hospital gown, falls down a flight of stairs. Might this have anything to do with the accident? Another theory is that he may have had a drug overdose. (Hoseok is seen taking pills in several music videos.)
The prologue sees Jimin in the hospital hooked up to an IV. As for why, we can only guess. Overworking? An eating disorder? Mental illness? That time he tried to drown himself? We may never know.
When Seokjin leaves the jail after talking to Namjoon, he sees Taehyung— bound and being escorted by police. Taehyung had killed his father, an abusive man who beat him and his sister since they were small. This led to Taehyung being arrested. (In the I Need U music video, real-life Taehyung sees his father abusing his sister. He snaps and breaks a nearby bottle, stabbing his father several times.)
In the prologue, Jungkook stands on a tall building overlooking the sea, night lights of the city below. He perches on the edge, arms outstretched, serene expression on his face. This, we later learn, is the moment he jumps and commits suicide. Saving Jungkook's life becomes an important part of Seokjin's quest. (The image of Jungkook standing, arms outstretched, is a recurring motif in music videos, particularly Euphoria.)
I haven't read many Webtoons, but I can safely say this is the best comic/graphic novel of my life. (Of course, part of it might be the fact that I'm a massive BTS stan. It's fascinating to see recognizable scenes from the video storyline in Webtoon form.) Besides the BTS part, though— the comic isn't too BTS related at all— it is still amazing. The art is wonderful and consistent, and the plot is innovative and gripping. Pacing is perfect and regular update is guaranteed. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a brain and eyes.
